DNS service is simple in theory and it used to be the case that service from a couple of servers was sufficient. But in practice it is becoming increasingly complex. The reason for this trend is a combination of growing threats and an improving price point and sometimes new feature requirements. It is now close to impossible to run DNS other than at a loss, except for the major providers. What will be the long term consequences of the ongoing re-structuring of this critical Internet component?
